Does Marijuana help with sleep?

Do you have trouble sleeping? Study's show that the use of Marijuana actually helps insomniacs and healthy people to falling asleep faster. In 1973 small study showed the time for insomniacs to fall asleep with the use of THC reduced it to one hour. A later test in 2013 showed THC also helped sleeping with ease with non insomniacs. Studies also show that Marijuana can also help to a longer duration in sleep, increasing the dose of THC also increases the time spent sleeping. An interesting study said that THC can increase the amount of deep sleep that most people get without THC, which is good because deep sleep helps the restoration process that occurs during sleep. Another way Marijuana affects sleep is it reduces the amount of REM sleep, people dream less if they go to sleep lit. While this could be a negative scientists are still not sure how important REM sleep is.

Would this make you want to try Marijuana in your future?
Do you believe any of this is true?
Is Marijuana part of your future?

  1. I think this was well written but we all know that REM sleep is very important. I don't believe the main purpose of this plant is sleep relief so I would personally not try it to help with that. On the other hand I agree that it could be a way to help people sleep more and for longer. Marijuana is not part of my future because drugs are bad mmmkay. I just worry that this is affecting REM sleep is that an issue for you?

  2. I think that people with sleeping or people that lack sleep should try Marijuana. People that might think that they don't get enough sleep should try also. Its a positive things because it lets people sleep longer and into a deeper sleep. The only bad affect is see is the the REM is being reduced. You might also become more lazy and that might not be good health wise.

  3. I believe that for some people the use of medical marijuana is good and can help but it isn't for everyone. There are many benefits of using marijuana but a con of using it is the lack of REM sleep. REM sleep is very important because it changes things from short term memory to your long term memory, to retain information. It is also needed to dream.

  4. I think it would be good to try if you know that its hard to sleep. It will let you be able to relax and sleep longer. Although you can get a better sleep, it will be a negative on the REM sleep which is important for your future because it helps turn short term memory into long term.

  5. I think that it is good thing if people are able to use medical marijuana to help them sleep because it helps them with a big health issue and that is sleep.

  7. I do not believe this is all true, but I would be more likely to believe it if it was from credible source that cites research. Assuming that the information is correct, I would still not use marijuana in the future because I do not have sleep problems. In the case that I was to develop issues, I would prefer to try other treatment options before resulting to medical marijuana.

  8. Using marijuana to sleep for insomniacs, to me, seems fine, for them I think the benefits out weigh the drawbacks. But as someone who is not an insomniac, I believe the opposite, that the drawbacks out weigh the benefits, because of the lack of REM sleep. From the things we've seen in class, REM sleep is very important for memory and other things.

  10. If people are truly having problems with sleep and have no other alternative to the use and just use it to sleep I think this is a bad thing while the effects sound intriguing i don't think people should resort to smoking marijuana just to help them sleep to me that just defeats the purpose of its use

  11. I think this is all about preference I mean you would have to try it to see if this works for you but I don't think I would really try it because I don't have trouble falling asleep so I don't need to change anything. I also wouldn't do this because it reduces your REM sleep and I thought that is important because thats when you dream a lot in your sleep and i wouldn't want to reduce that.

  12. A lot of the information this article presented was very vague. It actually used the phrases “…seems to have a wide range of side effects…” and “…this is likely a good thing…” while discussing the effects of marijuana. I have a hard time finding any of it convincing when so much of it seem unsure of itself. When I’m reading an article on potential drug use for health benefits, I don’t want to be seeing words like “could” and “tends to”. I’m not seeing marijuana in my future based off of this article.

  13. I believe that people with sleeping disorders should be allowed to smoke marijuana before trying to fall asleep. I was confused about the part in the article about REM sleep. I thought it was establishes that REM sleep was important and that we all needed it. And also with marijuana being illegal in many states it would be pretty hard for people to get a medical card because they have 'trouble' sleeping.

  14. I understand that it has been proven that marijuana can help with sleep, but I do believe that there are other possible solutions to sleep problems. I do not believe this would be the safest method as marijuana comes with many negative side effects according to http://www.defense.gov/specials/drugawareness/marijuana1.html. I would personally not try this method, however, it may be the right thing for others. I found this post to be very interesting!

  15. I mean I guess marijuana can help some people sleep, but I don't believe that its the healthiest option out there. I think that a lot of people that like smoking would agree with this post, but I don't believe it to be an effective way to help with sleep deprivation because in the end all its doing is getting you high which then affects the amount of REM sleep you get which then affects your long term memory, so no I don't think its a good way to help you fall asleep.

  16. I strongly believe that marijuana does help you go to sleep or puts you into a lazy mode depending on how much you smoke it. Personally I don't think I will use marijuana in the future because I don't really have interest in it now but there could be a possibility.
    P.S. Drugs are bad M'kay.
