Music and Stress

You've had a long day at school, work, or otherwise occupation. You're stressed out, and you aren't sure how to remedy this period of elongated stress. According to several studies, listening to music when you are stressed out is proven to alleviate stress and fight off any feelings of restlessness, anxiety, pain, and more. We've discussed the effects of dopamine on the brain; this article is an example as to how you can get that dopamine working.

Personally, I enjoy listening to music the majority of the time. Sometimes it can help me calm down whereas other times it can energize me when I need a pick-me-up. It's amazing what listening to a song can do in terms of keeping your body healthy.

Answer any/all of the following questions:
Do you think that schools should have some sort of period of time where music can be played freely during class?

What kind of music do you listen to? Do you think that it helps you de-stress?

Do you think that listening to music with friends would make a difference? Why/why not?

  1. I think that we should be able to listen to music whenever we have free worktime in class (tutorial and other), for I think it causes me to actually be more focused because I am less likely to start a conversation with my peers (because I'm wearing headphones). This links back to our unit on stress and stress management. If, as the article proposes, music is really good for our health for it lowers stress, I think we should learn about it in the Stress unit in Health. I definitely think music makes me de-stress, and I constantly listen to music while I work to make me feel more focused. Where this might be an issue is when kids chose to focus on the music instead of the work, which could lead to a drop in productivity.

  2. I think similarly to Peter and believe that students should be allowed to listen to music during work time that doesn't involve collaboration with other students. My musical taste is very conflicting because I either listen to alot of classic rock, or rap, I feel that they both can help Me to lower my stress because depending on my mood sometimes I just need the sound of a guitar solo, and other times I need a very dark and aggressive rap song.

  4. I agree with both of them, students should be allowed to listen to music during work. Like if it's an individual work period, I think students should be allowed to listen to music, this can help to reduce stress and sometimes listening to music can help with focusing.

  5. I think schools should have a yoga period in the morning that plays music during the class. I personally really liked when we did yoga in health class that one day and I think I'd be more awake and less stressed doing that everyday if we had a yoga class that played music during it. I think listening to music with friends does make a difference because with friends you're probably going to listen to music you can all listen to it loudly together while being alone will allow you to just be calmed down- depending on the music style.

  7. I love it when teachers allow students to listen to music while they work in class. Not only does it block out other distracting noises, but it is also calming and relaxing. I totally agree with music causing less stress. I don't think involvement with friends would really make a difference. With our without music, music is an easy way to distress, and God knows we need it.

  8. The article says that music has been proven, by certain studies, to be an all around medication to ease pain, help memory recollections, and help people's moods. I agree with every bit of this article. Music is like therapy to most teenagers. It helps us with rough family incidents, breakups, hanging out with friends, etc. I believe that every school should have a music period because not only does music improve people's moods, but it can help them focus and work faster.

I personally listen to almost every genre of music. It always improves my emotions when I'm sad, mad, or even happy. I love music because the lyrics in a song are so relatable. Most songs are about life experiences and what the musician/artist is going through in his/her life. This is relatable to our lives because we're all experiencing the same things at different times. Without music I don't think I could relieve my stress as well.

In addition, I feel like listening to music with friends is fun when you're at a birthday party, or just in a happy mood. When you surround yourself with good music and good people, it can make you a lot happier than you were before. However, some people prefer to be alone at times and like to listen to music alone. This is perfectly understandable because sometimes people just want to reflect on their day and their situations by themselves with music as their remedy for coping.

  9. Students should be able to listen to music during work time, but not during lectures or presentations. It is calming, soothing, and can even improve concentration. Personally, I am not tied down to only one genre of music. I like anything with a good melody. I do not think that listening to music with friends would make a really big difference.

  10. I totally agree with this. Musics helps me a lot with stress I feel, but it also helps me to get going and before games it calms my nerves. I think students should be allowed to listen to music during class. I'm allowed to listen to music during my math class and i feel like it isn't a distraction.

  11. I do think that music is one of the greatest ways of de-stressing, especially if you've found that niche of certain music that you really enjoy listening to. I know that when I feel stressed, music is one of the first things I go to to calm down. I think that students should be able to listen to music freely because sometimes music can help people focus more. I read somewhere that listening to classical music when studying enables your mind to focus more, and in general listening to classical music relaxes you and can really help someone with their stress levels.

  13. Advisory should just be a music period for us to relax. We can do work if we want, but the important part is that we are in a relaxed state of mind. I think this is important because it gives us a little break from all the stress and anxiety we deal with at school. Music helps me stay calm and focused while working in class, so I don't see why teachers are so against it.

  14. yes I agree that listening to music to find different feelings and express with yourself with others and you will maybe have the same interest in music as others and that can spark a new friendship.

  15. I most definitely think that music is one of the best things ever... It helps put your mind at ease, get you focused, or put you in a happy mood. I agree that music should be able to be played at certain times in class, such as when you're having personal time to work on an activity. I listen to pretty much all genres of music. When I am with my friends it's the BEST to play music because we all sing our hearts out and this always distracts me from stress and makes me feel super happy.

  16. I believe that music really does help because when I'm tired and i plug in my headphones and turn up the volume i feel that i have more energy. It would make total sense to listen to music while working quietly in class.

  18. Anytime I've had a bad day I blast music in my ears. It helps me feel better. I listen to a ton of different music and it varies fro rap to country to pop. I have certain songs/artists for when I want to cry and I have certain songs/artists for when I want to feel happy. Music is apart of my everyday life. I take choir because I want to sing and it helps to have a class where I don't have to think about anything besides music. Music helps me not get overwhelmed.

  19. SHEEEESH !! Music is my LIFE !! I listen to all kinds of music to be 100% honest but I love Rap music the most. in my opinion, when I listen to rap, its a way to release any anger I am currently feeling. When I rap, I let ALL my anger out completely just by rhyming and using my words. Listening to musicwith friends is fun because it helps you relate to their style and taste of music.
