Getting Enough Sleep?

     The CDC (Center for Disease Control) reported that 35% of adults in America don't get enough sleep, which increases their risk of contracting illneses such as: diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.   Based off a study done in 2014, they reported that about 1 in 3 people in the United States.  In order to make sure that you get enough sleep, and don't put yourself in danger, the CDC listed several habits that may improve your ammount of sleep.  Some examples of what might help include: avoiding tobacco, removing all large electronics from the bedroom, and keeping your bedroom dark in order to relax.  Personally, I know that I am going to try some of these examples, because I really don't really feel like contracting heart disease or having a stroke.

How about all of you?  Do you feel like you could pull off taking electronics out of your room if it meant avoiding life-threatening diseases ?
And even if you did, do you get enough sleep as a student?

  1. This article was very interesting to read because I never knew or thought that not getting enough sleep could effect your health in the future. I also was shocked at the type of diseases that you could get. I think for me it'd be hard at first to pull of taking out electronics out of my room because I have a lot of plugs plugged in my room and as in for me it'd be a lot of work to take out then put back in everyday especially because I don't fall asleep at a certain time, But knowing that this could help me a lot in the future from getting these type of diseases and also would help me get more sleep in the mean time this is something that I should definitely start doing everyday. As a student I do not get enough sleep than I should normally do. It takes a while for me to sleep not only because of that but also because of doing homework last minute most of the time, going on my phone until late at night and watching tv or movies. I am considering changing ways so that I'm able to get more sleep so that in the future I could stay healthy.

  2. I do not get enough sleep. I know that sleep is really important and that it can help me so much. I procrastinate alot and that is my problem so I end up doing my homework late at night. And I think sleeping 8 hours is the best for me however I usually sleep about 6-7 hours. I do not think I would be able to sleep with all the electronics off because I am lazy and I know i will forget. I need music in order to fall asleep and It is hard for me to wake up therefore I need my phone to be right next to me.

As someone who regularly gets about 6 hours of sleep every school night, I know how lack of sleep effects the body badly with usually moodiness, lack of focus, and just being overly tired but I didn't know lack of sleep could lead to things like diabetes or heart disease. I already try to keep electronics out of my room and I noticed that when I don't look at my phone before bed, I find it a lot easier to sleep. But even though it's easier to sleep, as a student, to be getting a appropriate amount of sleep, I would need to fall asleep at 9:30 pm every night, but with AP classes, homework, projects, and extracurriculars, it's impossible to get the correct amount of sleep.

  4. I personally do not get enough sleep. The recommended sleep for a teenager is 9.25 hours a night. I am barely getting 7 hours of sleep. It would be hard to take put all of the electronics out of my room because I use my phone as a alarm to wake up in the morning. Even if I did take out all of the electronics out of my room when I sleep, I still will not get enough sleep due to homework and other activities I do. Knowing that anyone who lacks sleep is at a risk of all these health issues makes it scary to lack sleep at all. I think that the majority of citizens doesn't understand the consequences of lacking sleep, therefore, leading to people having serious health issues that can be prevented by just getting the proper amount of sleep.

  5. Like almost every other high school student, no I don't get enough sleep. I get an average of 6 hours of sleep nightly, including the weekends, so I definitely feel the effects of sleep deprivation (moodiness, headaches, lack of focus) however I didn't realize it could have such a profound long term effect on the body. I don't think I'd be able to take out all electronics. I use my phone for an alarm and probably wouldn't end up getting an alarm clock. Even if I did, I have lights and a tv plugged in in my room. I hate the fact that I don't get good sleep, and wish I had the time to. But with homework, extracurriculars, plus everything else it just doesn't happen. Knowing all these health risks makes me want a nice long nights sleep even more, but my procrastination has me posting a blog comment at 10 PM. I definitely could change some habits to help me get more sleep, but it would be hard to.

  6. I'm actually not too surprised that 1 in 3 Americans reported sleeping less than 7 hours. I feel like the modern lifestyle is all about productivity. Sleep is when you are not productive, and thus sleep is generally the first thing to go when time is needed. Also, at the end of the article it states that snoring is considered a sleep disorder. Snoring in literature and media generally has a connotation of deep, restful sleep, so that's interesting that it's listed as a sleep disorder.

  7. I feel that taking electronics out of my room would be a great idea to a resolution for getting more sleep. I tend to play on my phone before I go to bed and sometimes end up spending an hour on my phone without even realizing. So I agree with taking electronics away and my decision for this is to set my phone away from me so that I can't play on it during the night.

  8. I can understand how taking electronic devices out of my room would make me sleep better. Sometimes when it feels like I can't sleep, I look at my phone for a couple minutes because it seems like, if I'm going to be awake, I might as well look at my phone. But I feel like I would fall asleep in a much shorter amount of time if I didn't look at my phone, so the phone provides a temptation. I'm going to sleep with my phone in another room tonight and see what happens.

  9. I don't think I can disconnect my laptop,TV, and phone charger in bedroom.There isn't a lot of room in my home and very few plugs. This doesn't frighten me because I get enough sleep stroke, diabetes, and heart disease doesn't run in my family. I'd like to see or read another study.

  10. This article is very interesting for me because I know that some people don't get enough sleep. According to the article, it says that people who don't get enough sleep, may cause diabetes or heart disease.
    For the electronic part, I use my iPod before I go to bed. For school nights or weekends, I play on my iPod to either listen music or search something up, but when it gets too late at night (11:45 or 2:00), I turn off my iPod, put it on my desk, and go to sleep.

  11. I found it interesting in the article that the graph showed that people got more sleep in more rural states - because those states tend to be poorer, they may have fewer electronic devices disrupting their sleep.

    I feel like I could pull off taking electronics out of my room because I could just read a book and usually that helps me fall asleep. There is this app that I have on my laptop that was recommended to me that shuts down the blue light coming from your screen at a certain time. This increases the amount of sleep you would get compared to if you didn't have it because it doesn't trick your brain into thinking that it is daytime because of the blue light, which is the type of light that keeps you awake.

  12. This article was very insightful, as it really showed the adverse of affects of sleep deprivation. I also liked how it had a lot of data. In God we Trust, but everyone else bring me data. This article was especially informative at outlining the risks of not getting enough sleep. For instance, I had no idea that "sleeping less than 7 hours per night is linked to increased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and poor mental health, as well as early death." Sleep deprivation can have so many bad effects. However, humans still try to deprive themselves of sleep in order to be more productive. Humans are actually the only mammals that physically deprive themselves from sleep. Most other mammals are never tired during the day, and that's how they have the energy to hunt. I need to work on putting my phone away before I sleep, so I can get up in the morning and kill a Zebra.

  13. For me, I sleep well at night because I close my eyes and there are no loud noises from keeping me awake. Every day, I go to bed at 9:00 and turn off my computer and my IPad. I also have the habit to not smoke and I turn off the lights, so the room is dark. With these habits, I can get more sleep and prevent diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. Yes, I would pull off my electronics because I want to get enough sleep and prevent contracting illnesses.

I feel as a student, it is just as difficult for us to get sleep as a adults, whether it's homework, extra curricular activities or hanging out with friends, students have so much to do each and every day. I feel that there should be less homework to solve this problem. The extra stress it creates is unnecessary and it would give students time to make up on the work they have missed or didn't do.

  15. Thankfully I usually get the recommended amount of sleep for a teen each night. I believe it is because most of the time I go to sleep at a certain time and wake up at a certain time even on the weekends. This is one of the sleep habits that was mentioned in the article and I believe it could help for the sleep deprived. I also put my phone in airplane mode so I won't be tempted to check any notifications, which is another sleep habit that could be useful.

  16. For the most part I feel that I get enough sleep but if it means avoiding life-threatening diseases such as strokes and diabetes then I would take electronics out of my room when I go to sleep. I think during the weekdays I do get enough sleep as a student but on the weekends I feel like I should get more sleep.

  17. One thing I try to be good on is my sleep schedule most nights I get around 7 hours of sleep. I try to get 8 at least but it is very hard because of school work other daily things in my life. Personally I don't have any electronics in my room the only thing I have is my phone. I usually charge my phone across the room so that its not a distraction while i try and fall asleep. I feel like for most students it is hard to get good slope because of all the home work we are assigned. I think that the issue most people have with getting enough sleep is the lack of exercise we get everyday and the amount of time we spend on our phones lap tops tv etc. I think that cutting down on things like that and increasing our daily exercise we would become more tired and fall asleep earlier with would increase the hours of sleep we get.

  18. I don't get enough sleep as teens should be getting 9.25 hours a night which is pretty much impossible for most of us. The article says removing electronics from your room will help you, but for me i don't think it will make a difference. As a student i don't get enough sleep on week days and on weekends i try to catch up on some sleep but still am sleep deprived.
