Smoking Among Teenagers

How does smoking effect young teenagers?

Holding the number-three spot, down from number one in 2007, is smoking, with 32 percent of U.S. adults rating it as a major problem for teenagers today. It is estimated that at least 4.5 million U.S. adolescents between the ages of 12-17, smoke cigarettes. Each day in the United States, more than 3,800 youth aged 18 years or younger smoke their first cigarette, and an additional 2,100 youth and young adults become daily cigarette smokers. Cigarette smoking during childhood and adolescence produces several health problems, including an increase in respiratory illnesses, decreased physical fitness, and potential retardation in lung growth and lung function. Prevention is critical when it comes to teen smoking. From 2011 to 2014, current cigarette smoking declined among middle and high school students. Nearly 3 of every 100 middle school students reported in 2014 that they smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days—a decrease from 4.3% in 2011. About 9 of every 100 high school students reported in 2014 that they smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days—a decrease from 15.8% in 2011. I think that smoking has become popular among teenagers because of the increase in smoking products, such as electronic cigarettes, hookahs, and smokeless tobacco. I also think that there has been an increase due to how addictive smoking becomes. Once teens start smoking, it becomes hard for them to stop and they can influence others to try it too. I think that smoking will continue to be popular among teenagers unless there becomes a decrease in smoking products.

Why do you think smoking has become increasingly popular among teenagers?
What can be done to decreasing smoking?
Why do you think people start smoking?
Do you think teen smoking is due to peer pressure?

  1. I think smoking among teens has become increasingly popular because they see there friends doing it so they want to fit in. They don't want to be called scared so they decide to try it without knowing the consequences. What can be done about teen smoking is setting up stricter rules to make sure no one under the age of 18 are smoking them illegally. I think teens start smoking to relieve the stress of there everyday life and to fit in.

  2. In my opinion, smoking has become popular among teenagers because they are curious about the feeling of smoking. In adolescence, teenagers like to seek for some interesting things, they are easy to confused what is right and what is wrong. The smoking people around teenagers also affect their behavior. We need to improve teenagers' mentality that smoking is harmful for your health. Let them know that smoking has many bad influence in your life. I think people start smoking is to unwind because people who live in the world have a lot of problems and pressures. I think that teen smoking is not due to peer pressure because they have their own decision to do things. The sensible teens know what is the right thing that they do in their age.

  3. I think it's popular for teenagers because they think it makes them look cool. Stop the manufacturing of cigarette is the only way to stop smoking. Two reasons people start smoking, like I said before to look cool. And to make the smokers feel good, why else would they smoke. Yeah, teens fall so easily to peer pressure.

  4. I think that a lot of teens think it's "cool" to smoke. I am sure everyone knows the consequences however if teens knew more details, maybe it would affect them more and might make them think twice before smoking. And yes, there is peer pressure.

  5. I think smoking has become increasingly popular for teens because due to peer pressure. I also think that teens don't want to be left out with what most people are doing and they want to do it because they think "it's cool". I think what could help stop people from smoking is from either changing the age ability to be able to buy cigarettes and etc. instead of having to be 18 it should be 21. I also think what could definitely help is to stop surrounding yourself with people that smoke and to avoid the people that pressure and push you to smoke. I think there are two big reasons to why people start smoking, the first reason is because they think it's a big stress reliever and it'll help you feel better but little do they know that smoking doesn't make you feel stress free forever it only can help for minutes or hours and in that matter of time it could do a lot of really bad damages to your body. The second reason why I think people start smoking is because they think they need to do what everyone is doing and keep up with the hype so that they don't feel left out or anything.

  6. After reading this article about smoking and teens, I totally agree with it. It makes a lot of sense that 4.5 million US adolescences smoke cigarettes. I used to have a lot of friends who were addicted to cigarettes . I always thought it was crazy that they were because I would never try a cigarette even when I'm old enough to buy them.

  7. Smoking to me has always been something i would never do because of my family's history with smoking. I knew it was fairly addicting so it's not a surprise that so many kids are hooked on it now. I think smoking has become popular among teens because getting access to smoking products is fairly easy. To decrease smoking among teens, I feel like there should be stricter smoking regulation laws for tobacco and non tobacco porducts. Some people I know started to smoke because they found it as a cheap way to relieve stress and it was a common thing among their friends at parties. This led me to believe that peer pressure has a huge part in what starts a smoker because some people don't see smoking as a life threatening activity and only see it as a social one.

  8. I think that this article is relatable especially in your summary when you said that because teens are exposed to new products for smoking it gives them an outlet for things such as stress and anxiety. Some teenagers think it's cool to smoke but reading the article gave me more insite on the bad effects it has on teens. I hope that teenagers and adults become more aware of the things they put in their system and know the long term effects it can put in their bodies.

  9. I would disagree that smoking is increasing nowadays because we are seeing a pretty significant decrease over the years. Yes it was really popular and increasing drastically in the past but now it is decreasing. I think with more classes and awareness of the negative effects of smoking teens have been drawn away from them however there is that stigma that it is "cool" to smoke. There is also pressure from friends and can teens can be attracted to it also by seeing celebrities do it. Due to these reasons, is why I think teens still do it but on the flip side I also do believe it is decreasing because of awareness.

  10. I disagree and think that the amount of people smoking is going down. Their is an increase of smoking marijuana but tobacco is going down. A way to get less people smoking is to keep telling everyone what smoking does to your body and how it rots you from the inside out. Not only that but now a days I see a lot of non smoking commercials compared to when I was younger.

  11. I think that smoking is popular among teenagers because of a combination of curiosity and peer pressure. Teenagers see everyone else doing it and think to themselves that it can't be that bad for them because all of their friend as are doing it. In the article it says that cigarette smoking has gone down among teens from 2011-2014. I think this is because more teenagers are smoking marajuana than cigarettes. I think smoking can be prevented by better informing teens of the serious consequences of smoking.

  12. Smoking, as we all know, is unhealthy for us. However, I believe that teenagers continue to smoke because of peer pressure. Given that a teenager's brain is not fully developed, they may not be able to properly weigh the risks and rewards of the situation. In order to combat this problem, we need to better inform teens of the risks of smoking, especially when others pressure them. Furthermore, we should help teens anticipate possible scenarios so that teens do not have to make a spontaneous decision. This would significantly improve the problem.

  13. I believe teens don't really smoke cigarette's anymore because, smoking marijuana has shot high in the teens category. They see that famous rappers and such smoke weed so they believe it is so the trend continues on, however I don't encourage to smoke weed nor do I disapprove of it if used to its correct purposes because I believe its better see teens doing none of these things at this age, but I rather see a trend that doesn't involve teens getting lung cancer.
