Do protein shakes really help you gain muscle mass?

This article points out that there are benifets to protein shakes, but that they don't work miracles. There is significant evidence showing that protein shakes can help for building muscle mass and for being a meal replacement for weight loss. Even though it does help, the article says that exercising and eating healthy are the most important factors. Drinking protein shakes alone will not necessarily give you more muscle mass. I found this article interesting because I drink protein shakes myself somewhat often and I was curious to know if they are actually beneficial to my health. http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/protein-shakes-really-work-7372.html

Do you use protein shakes in your diet? Why? What is your opinion on protein shakes in ones diet? How important are protein shakes in one's diet?

  1. Using the shakes myself I notice that it only works if the user is on a daily workout routine. I wouldn't recommend using the shakes if you want to use loss weight or get skinnier but if you want to gain muscle mass. The use of the shakes should be used if the user wants to gain muscle mass through a daily workout routine.

  2. I'm a little skeptical of Protein Shakes. While the article does seem to imply that clinical studies have shown the benefits of the protein shake, I doubt that just drinking one thing would have health benefits. I think you would need a balanced diet of other foods along with the shakes. I'm sure protein shakes help, especially since muscles need protein, but I do not think they are the be-all end-all muscle growth products that some people make them out to be.

  3. I use protein shakes myself because after practice or working out, I always assumed that it can build body muscle. I always assumed that protein shakes were mainly used for gaining muscles and body mass. But as the article pointed out, it is also used as a weight lose supplement. I was suprised by this because after a workout, you would have a protein drink to build muscles, but It can help you lose weight as well. I do not believe that protein shakes should be in someone's daily diet because I personally believe that people should only drink it after a workout or using it as a weight lose supplement.

  4. I don't drink protein shakes because I personally think that it is more natural and healthier to work out in order to gain muscle mass. I think that people should exercise if they want to gain muscle mass because I don't believe that protein shakes are good for one's health. I am surprised that "protein shakes can help for being a meal replacement for weight loss" because drinking protein shakes in replace for a meal seems that it could negatively affect one's health because some protein shakes don't provide necessary nutrients that one would consume in a regular meal.

  5. When drinking protein shakes I don't think they are a very good source to use for muscle mass. If you start to work out more I feel like you will have a way better source of gaining muscle mass. Protein shakes I feel like have things in them that could negatively effect ones health.

  6. I personally drink protein shakes after I workout because they are a fast acting source of protein. Protein shakes also help my muscles recover after a workout. I do not think protein shakes should be used as a meal replacement because they do not contain all the necessary nutrients a person needs. However I do think they should be used as a post workout beverage.

  7. I really never use protein shakes in my diet because I am diabetic and eat fresh foods.
You can use protein shakes for your diet, if you really want to be skinny, but for me, I would not recommend it because one protein shake does not have all nutrients compared to a regular meal that has it.
It is not that important to have a protein shake, unless if you are trying to be healthy and lean.

  8. I used to drink protein shake until I started to notice that I was eating less and feeling worse on the inside. It does help you lose weight and gain muscle mass because when I was drinking it, I went from 222 lbs. to 196 lbs. over the summer going into sophomore year. That's when I noticed that I was eating less and less everyday. As preference, I would not drink protein shakes as it will alter your body in a way you would not like.

  9. I have used protein shakes in the past but not particularly to gain muscle mass. I drank them because I wasn't getting enough protein in my diet and at one point I couldn't eat food so I had to drink protein shakes to feel better. I don't think that protein shakes are good or bad for ones diet, It depends on what the person eats, and if they need protein. I do not believe protein shakes are important to ones diet because as long as you're getting enough protein it's not necessary

  10. I am kind of neutral towards protein shakes. It can help people if they use it correctly, drinking it by it self and expecting muscle gains will not work, you need to incorporate it with the food you eat. I use it sometimes and still eat regular foods because of the things i learned about them.
